Welcome to the web page for the Mothers' Union at Holy Trinity, Cuckfield
We welcome new members to our branch, which is in the Diocese of Chichester. It is a small group of
both men and women who meet once a month for fellowship and prayer combined with discussions or talks from guest speakers. We respond to the needs of our community and church in a variety of ways that assist in supporting families through various projects to which members bring a wide variety of skills and practical help.
******* We wish you a peaceful and happy 2010********

TEA AND A GOOD READ

Details from this year's programme are available now, please see link below
WHAT WE HAVE BEEN UP TO RECENTLY
This year Mothers Union is still following the theme of relationships with an emphasis on the cost
of relationships. We had an ever popular Questions night in October which was open to all and in
November we had a crafting morning. In July we explored just how far afield our members had lived or had families that live - little
red dots sprung up around the world but the main cluster was here in the south east. We enjoyed a summer lunch in
the beautiful gardens of Jose Wright and were entertained by our auctioneer as we had fun guessing and
bidding for the Bible Auction items. Our May meeting was about the Eastbourne Contact Centre which provides a safe
and secure environment in which parents who do not have custody of their children can meet them.
In April we said goodbye to our Assistant Priest and we celebrated with inviting her to choose music
and a book as though she was on a desert Island. We have a very popular Tea and a Good Read afternoon
each month.
*****2010 PROGRAMME*****
Our activities generally include meeting with other churches and groups in the
community and listening to guest speakers. We also arrange outings and attend
Deanery and Diocesan events. We certainly do not just sit around drinking tea
and gossiping, although these are important too!! Our meetings are
a mixture of daytime and evening, something for everyone. Come and meet us,
you would be very welcome!

ACTIVITIES
WALKING GROUP
The Walking group meets during the year to walk around the local countryside :- Balcombe, Staplefield, Ansty, Bolney and Warninglid. There is usually a handy pub at which to slake their thirst or eat a meal at the end of their walks.
OUTINGS
Outings have been organised to Arundel Cathedral to see the Corpus Christe flower carpet; to the Scaynes Hill Embroidery; to the Flower Festival at St Marys de Haura, Shoreham and to Hamsey Millennium Embroidery.
ACTIVITIES WITHIN THE CHURCH
We are involved in church services through leading intercessions, reading the lessons,
singing in the choir, acting as sidesmen, playing in the Music Group, bell ringing,
serving coffee after services and helping at Lent Lunches. We have introduced an annual
Advent Service of Light and services for the tinies and their parents. We have
participated in the Christmas Tree Festival since 2003 both by decorating a tree
and assisting with refreshments. We make and distribute Christmas Cards to the
congregation at the Christmas Eve Crib Service. Some members are on the PCC and/or sub committees.
LOCAL ACTION
Helping at Lewes Prison Visitor Centre and Cuckoos Mother and Toddler Group; collecting toiletries for Christmas presents for the detainees at Tinsley House Immigration Detention Centre @ Gatwick Airport; Link for Parenting Courses.
USING OUR TALENTS
In 2002 The members designed and made a new MU banner.
In 2003 two members had poems published in the MU anthology “Even Angels Tread Softly”.
In 2004 one member had a poem published in the Chichester Diocesan Magazine.
In 2006 one member embroidered a beautiful table cloth to be used out our meetings and events.
FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES
We raise funds to give to projects organised by The Mothers' Union by participating in Cuckfield Mayor's Procession and the Cuckoo Fayre; organising raffles and auctions at our monthly meetings.
BRANCH HISTORY
There are various refernces to the Mothers Union in the Cuckfield Parish Magazine. In
1889 - it recorded a meeting held to discuss forming a branch of the Mothers' Union. In
June 1909 - no meetings were held until further notice. In 1931 - a new banner was
dedicated. No further reports of meetings appeared in the Parish Magazine after January
1974. On 19 September 1999 - the Cuckfield Branch of the Mother's Union was
re-established after more than 25 years of closure. Although we are not a large group we
are a very vibrant and active branch.
THE MOTHERS UNION
The Mothers' Union was founded by Mary Sumner with prayer as its core. It does much to
help and support family life at home and abroad. As an international organisation it has
supported the cancellation of world debt; and around the world are running adult literacy
programmes; supporting local family workers and through grants it assists in aiding
self-help projects.
The Mothers' Union
Every single day, 30,000 children are dying as a result of extreme poverty.
The Mothers Union remains committed to helping to eradicate this.
